Meet Ana-Maria Avadanei

Ana-Maria was born on Feb. 18, 1989

Ana Maria was born in Caransebes, a city in Western Romania. She was born with a handicap to her legs and she needed to have surgery. She was often in the hospital. During one of these time she received a vaccine which was tainted with HIV. She thus became HIV positive and soon thereafter he mother abandoned her. Her father does not accept her as his own child. In 1991 she was placed by the Child Protection Service into a government orphanage which cared for babies. Her parents never visited her. She has four older brothers, all of whom are also in orphanages. In 2001 Ana Maria was transferred to the Casa Tabita, a Christian orphanage not far from the city of Timisoara, Romania. She still keeps in contact with her brothers. In 2004 Ana Maria had the opportunity to meet her mother. Her mother calls her, but infrequently. In 2005 one of Ana Maria’s brothers died in a work accident. This caused Ana Maria much suffering. Ana Maria is doing quite well now. She is under the supervision of a doctor and her treatments help her to feel well. She is attending a special school, in the town where the orphanage is located, and is doing well. She is a beautiful girl with long dark hair and green eyes. She knows everything about her HIV condition and how to protect herself and others. She is also accepting of her situation. Her hobbies are drawing, painting, and music. She likes to sing and participates in the local church choir. She loves butterflies, her favorite color is blue, and she has many friends. She is a friendly girl and is quite pleasant.
