Joy Children Home
Chennai is India's fourth largest city, with a population well over four million. However, not far from the hustle and bustle of this industrial & commercial center is a small, tranquil village. It is here that one can find an orphanage known as the Joy Children Home, where 26 children are being loved, cared for, and given the Gospel. Years ago, director Velu purchased a 1-acre plot of land with the dream that one day he would build a ministry center which would reach out to the surrounding villages. Little did he know that his "ministry center" would one day be an orphanage, caring for some of India's poorest and neediest citizens: its abandoned and at-risk children. The home was built in honor of the late Dr. Joyce Scott, a missionary to India who had a heart for children. Five staffers care for the children. Two of these, a married couple, fill the role of house parents and are affectionately called "mom" and "dad" by the children. At one point there were more children, but lack of funds forced the leaders to find other homes for some of them. The children at the Joy Home are taught Bible verses and Scripture songs and have devotions each day. The staff present the Gospel to the children and encourage them to share the Good News with their family members when to go visit in times of vacation. A trusted friend wrote the following about this home: "He (the orphanage director) started this orphanage by faith and God honored him and blessed the home with children and dedicated staff. I strongly recommend this children home for your concern and support. Please pray for them and help them to continue the home for the glory of God." Kidstown took his advice and began helping the Joy Home in March of 2009.
